{"id":8504,"date":"2022-09-02T11:50:19","date_gmt":"2022-09-02T11:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clustercs.com\/kb\/?docs=docly-documentation\/development-environment\/what-is-an-environment"},"modified":"2022-09-19T12:34:40","modified_gmt":"2022-09-19T12:34:40","slug":"development-environment-what-is-an-environment","status":"publish","type":"docs","link":"https:\/\/clustercs.com\/kb\/docs\/clustercs\/development-environment\/development-environment-what-is-an-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"What is an environment?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to understand how development environments are managed, let\u2019s first&nbsp;understand what a domain&nbsp;means under this context.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you add a domain to&nbsp;ClusterCS,&nbsp;a server folder is created for it&nbsp;where you can store the files&nbsp;and then you can&nbsp;manage&nbsp;resources associated to the&nbsp;domain: databases,&nbsp;cronjobs,&nbsp;emails, backups,&nbsp;SSL, speed rules, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initial domain setup&nbsp;is&nbsp;the \u201cProduction\u201d environment&nbsp;\u2013 it&nbsp;contains all&nbsp;those resources attached to it. The server folder path&nbsp;for the production environment is&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code has-medium-font-size\"><code>\/home\/&lt;user_name&gt;\/web\/live\/&nbsp;<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Every folder and file under that folder belongs to the Production environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating a new environment means&nbsp;adding a new server path associated with it and certain resources will be&nbsp;under its ownership.&nbsp;The server path would be as follows<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code has-medium-font-size\"><code>\/home\/&lt;user_name&gt;\/web\/&lt;env_name&gt;\/&nbsp;<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>&lt;<\/strong><strong>user_name<\/strong><strong>&gt;<\/strong>&nbsp;is the same user as the one for the Production environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;sections&nbsp;that are&nbsp;owned by&nbsp;the environment are: Databases, Backups, Speed, Logs and&nbsp;configuration options&nbsp;under the Manage&nbsp;page&nbsp;for Web Root, Php&nbsp;Version and Aliases.&nbsp;These sections will list only the environment databases, backups, speed rules, logging config etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you delete an&nbsp;environment&nbsp;you are automatically deleting those resources as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you delete a development environment its databases will be deleted as well&nbsp;but the databases under the other environments including Production will remain untouched. Same goes for all the other types of&nbsp;resources owned by the environment. The production environment is special because it&nbsp;actually means&nbsp;the entire domain and associated environments and resources.
